Every Thursday I’ll be posting another strange, mysterious, or frightening true story. The world is full of wonders, despite our desire to understand everything with science and technology, there are still things that are left unknown. Come with me and let’s explore them together.
Have you heard of Aquagenic Urticaria?
Can you imagine being burned alive every time a drop of water gets on your skin? That’s what life is like for Ivy Angerman a two year old from Minnesota. The child is only able to withstand being in a bath for 15 seconds before her entire body breaks out in hives. The cases of Aquagenic Urticaria are so rare that only 100 people have ever been reported with the condition, doctors and scientists are at a loss as to what causes it.
The many theories about the cause of the illness suggests that it might be what is inside of the water and not the water itself like chlorine or perhaps its the ions in the water itself.
Most people develop the sensitivity in the early puberty, like a UK woman who is unable to drink a single drop of water or get caught in the rain.
There is still no cure, nor treatment for this mystery illness.
In 1973 Salvador Dali published his cookbook Les Diners des Gala (Diner for a Gala) in which 136 recipes over 12 chapters are printed with his ubiquitous collages, pictures of the bizarre creations and photos of Dali himself with world class chefs. The food itself isn’t really that odd, with recipes like ‘Roast side of Beef and vegetables’ and “Lobster Tail in Tomato Sauce”, what is truly iconic are his presentations.
I have always aspired to be a party host, watching countless episodes of Martha Stewart Living, The Barefoot Contessa, and Nadia G’ Bitchin Kitchen. I’ve always aspired to be dressed in my finest, cooking course after course of unique and delicious meals for my friends. Right now it seems a little far-fetched, I live in a compact 1 bedroom apartment, with a small dining room table that is currently covered in burlesque costume ephemera. But I still pick up items for the eventual parties I will throw, items like plates, cups, serving bowls, silverware or what else would add to the over all atmosphere. I have the goal of throwing regular parties so crazy, with artists, thinkers and influencers that it becomes legendary. Until then, I will just continue to pin food ideas in my pinterest board and continue collecting pieces for my future parties.Continue reading “Have a Surrealist Thanksgiving with Salvador Dali’s recipes”
The Halloween holiday season may be over, and with it your first binge-watch of the excellent Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but there are more holiday treats in store for fans of the witchy-watchy show. As we recently reported, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa‘s spellbinding adaptation will be airing a special Christmas episode this December. The one-off, fittingly titled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale, can be glimpsed in a batch of new images from the upcoming hour.
Starring Kiernan Shipka, Lachlan Watson, Lucy Davis, Chance Perdomo, Michelle Gomez, Tati Gabrielle, Miranda Otto, and Ross Lynch, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale arrives on Netflix December 14th. The special arrives as part of the platform’s Christmas programming blitz, which includes Neo Yokio: Pink Christmas, Kurt Russell‘s take on Santa in The Christmas Chronicles, and other holiday classics.
Scott Snyder’s 2015 comic Wytches was one of the most popular horror comics to come out in an era of great horror comics and for 3 years fans have been clamoring for more. Fans anticipated the release of Wytches Vol 2 in 2018 but instead received this Halloween special one-shot. A good consolation prize but a consolation prize nontheless.
This comic is a prequel to the events of Wytches Vol 1 and follows the “Irons” family of wytch hunters go against a group of “High Horn” wytches in their small suburban town. The wytch-hunter in training is Sebastian who has had a life of upheaval, disorder and also poisoning micro-doses to train him as a proper hunter. But like any normal pre-teen, he just wants to hang out with his friends and race toy cars and this leads him to a crisis of conviction between the life he has and the life he wants. It all comes crashing down in the final act, with more than one emotional twist that leaves you pitying Sebastian for the kind of person he might grow into.
The art is again illustrated by Jock, which features his signature stained-glass-ink-blot style.
